"In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem." - Daniel 9:2.
Books play a very significant role in the life of every man. Without them, the knowledge of our past ancestry, cultures and civilizations would not have been possible. Through the reading of books, many purchase for themselves new ideas, technologies and information that has made them relevant in this evolving world. The faith of Jesus and the life of the believer is not an exception; it is not one that could be fully explored without books.
In the opening verse, Daniel, the prophet; the man who was known to be filled with light and wisdom, categorically stated that the means by which he decoded the destiny of the nation of Israel, as was communicated to the fathers, was through the books they made available. From scripture, it is realised that when God calls a man and entrusts a mandate into his care, He further instructs him to plainly inscribe it into writing. By so doing, them that follow will read and have understanding of the vision to run with it.
"And the LORD answered me, and said, write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it"-Habakkuk 2:2.
When we apply our hearts to the books written by our fathers in the faith, we are brought under their inspiration to have the same experience they had, and to appropriate the commensurate graces that come with them.
There is a certain dimension of the works of God that is hidden in books. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the scriptures explicitly connect the works of the magicians with books:
"Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver"- Acts 19:19.
Books have always been the treasure house of light and wisdom, and any one that has studiously given attention to them has partaken of their profit. Paul, the famous apostle, known for his in-depth understanding of the scriptures and the mysteries of Christ, together with unusual works of power in his ministry, never joked with his books. Scripture takes time to record how he carried these materials along during his ministry voyages.
"The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments." (2 Timothy 4:13)
Child of God, which books do you read? Are you giving attention to reading as the apostle Paul admonished? To catch the heavenly vision, you need to read the books of the men whose path you are ordained to tow. Meditate with them and light will stream out of them to you. Walk in this reality. Shalom!
